Which Challenge would you like to contribute to?

CHALLENGE 1: DEVELOPING LIVEABLE CITIES

How can we make cities more liveable, smarter and more human? How can we create better places for families with children, for the elderly and marginalised? What is urban quality of life for different groups, how can it be defined, measured, improved?

CHALLENGE 2: CONNECTING PEOPLE AND THEIR GOVERNMENT

How can we empower citizens to participate in urban planning and development? What tools, structures and resources do governments need to integrate citizen participation in their planning? How can we make participatory approaches work by connecting planning departments to people? What tools & methods to collect input and empower citizens are feasible in urban development? How can local authorities build capacity to take participatory approaches on board and act? How can we foster training and transformation within local authorities?

CHALLENGE 3: WISER CITIES – USING EVIDENCE & DATA

How can big and small data be used to inform urban development? What data is useful, what data is attainable? When is data not enough in evidence gathering? How can evidence for urban development best be collected, collated and analysed? How do we measure successful urban development – what are the metrics? How can data be shared between cities, NGOs, industry and entrepreneurs for improved citizen services? To what extent can public and private data be repurposed and reused for new services and apps?

CHALLENGE 4: FAIRER CITIES – URBAN EQUITY AND DIVERSITY

How can we make cities a place for all its inhabitants? How can inhabitants take an active stake in urban development? How does a commitment to equality of opportunity translate into urban development? How can we level the playing field so everyone benefits in cities? How can we work towards improving the quality of life for young and old, men and women alike?

OTHER CHALLENGES

What other key challenges do we need to address when it comes to participatory approaches to urban development? What innovative research insights, good practices, services and products should we include in the European Charter on Collaborative Urban Development?
